Jan. 01, 1967 - Lunar Transporter Using Principle of Pogo Stick: Synnyvile, Falifornia: Ever since men first dreamed of exploring the moon, they have been investigating dreamed of exploring the moon, they have been investigating numerous types of wheeled, tracked, and even walking machines for getting around on the lunar surface. Now, a simple toy enjoyed by generations of children has provide the idea for a scientific study that could literally provide lunar rapid transit system. Dr, Howard S. Seifert, a scientist at United Technology Centre, a division of United Aircraft Corporation, has developed a concept of moon travel based upon the principle of the bouncing pogo stick. Seifert envisions huge pogo stick-like transporters leaping over the moon's surface in 400-foot bounds Photo shows- This artist's concept shows how a lunar transporter using the principle of the pogo stick would operate. The idea for the Lunar leaper was developed by Dr. S. Seifert. The space cabin rides up the pole powered by gas which has been compressed by a piston during landing. Here, the cabin has just looked onto the pole as it bounds forward in a 400 foot leap. As the transporter area through space, the cabin will slide backwards along the pole, and the forward traction foot of the pole will point downwards. When the foot makes contact with the surface, the cabin will gently slide down the pole for a momentary touchdown, and the piston again compresses the gas, readying the machine for the next leap
