Jul. 07, 1971 - Luna Surface Magnetometer - Apollo 15 Lunar Module pilot James B. Irwin begins setting up a Lunar Surface Magnetometer (LSM) during a pre-mission training exercise at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. One of seven geophysical instruments which will be delivered to the moon's surface during the Apollo 15 mission, the magnetometer was developed and built by Philco-Ford Corporation's Western Development Laboratories Division, Palo Alto, Calif. NASA scientists believe that the LSM will give added support to their theories on the origin of the moon. After being unfolded and set up on the lunar surface (inset), the instrument's three directional sensors will continually measure variances in the permanent and induced magnetic fields on the moon's surface.
