Jun. 06, 1976 - The face of Mars at 425, 000 miles from Planet: NASA released this picture of MARS taken 425, 000 miles from the planet by the Viking l spacecraft. The spacecraft is expected to make a soft landing on the surface of Mars on July 4th in time for America's Bicentennial. In the picture North is toward the upper right and South is in the dark areas to the lower left. It is looking at the morning side of the planet as it rotates left to right. Numerous craters are visible at the lower left centre of the picture. The bright circular area at left centre is called Hellas, a 2, 000 mile in diameter impact basin
