Jun. 28, 1976 - Hazards Deals July 4 Viking 1 Spacecraft Landing on Mars: America's hopes of landing the Viking 1 spacecraft on Mars on July 4th to coincide with the Bicentennial festivities have been dashed. Scientists have decided that the selected landing site may be too hazardous and another-site date must be chosen. The spacecraft, which is due to begin a scientific orbiting the Red Planet since last Saturday taking photographs of potential spots for a soft landing.
