Aug. 08, 1981 - Kennedy Space Center, Fla. - Atlas Centaur 59 stands poised on Pad B at Complex 36, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, for the launch of the fifth and final in a series of military communication satellites. FLTSATCOM-E is scheduled for launch no earlier than August 6, during a window extending from 4:16 to 5:16 a.m EDT. FLTSATCOM-E will be placed in a stationary orbit 22, 231 miles above the equator at 73 degrees west longitude, or roughly due south of Boston, Mass. The new Department of Defence satellites is intended for service over the eastern Pacific Ocean. Launch will be conducted by KSC's Expendable Vehicle Operations Directorate
