Aug. 21, 1981 - This Voyager 2 image of Saturn's northern hemisphere shows considerable small-scale cloud structure and banding extending toward the polar region. The spacecraft acquired this image August 15 in the green filter from a range of 10.7 million kilometers (6.7 million miles). The wavy, ribbonlike structure at 47 degrees north latitude marks a high-speed westerly jet. Immediately above it lie two parallel dark cloud bands. These extend across the planet and show no noticeable change toward the limb, suggesting that aerosol layers may be absent from the upper atmosphere. There is a suggestion of another ribbon structure at 80 degrees north. The smallest feature seen in this image is about 100 km. (62 mi.).
