Aug. 08, 1983 - Kennedy Space Center, Fla. ---- The spacettle lights up the predawn sky as it lifts away from Complex 39's Pad A to begin the STS-8 mission with the first nighttime launch of the Shuttle era. Challenger's blastoff came 17 minutes late at 2:32 a.m. after mission managers prolonged the final built-in hold until weather conditions became acceptable. The evening's earlier rain storm failed to dampen enthusiasn for the spectacular sight of the Shuttle's departure on a planned six-day flight. The mission will also end in darkness with the Shuttle gliding to a nighttime touchdown on the concrete runway at Edwards AFS, California
