Dec. 04, 1981 - As the Dynamics Explorer 1 Spacecraft moves down from its apogee of nearly 14, 000 miles over the North Pole toward the night side of the Earth, unique views of the Earth and its auroral lights are possible. A Strikingly beautiful view of the Earth near Sunset at the spacecraft is shown in this picture, taken September 16. Space craft altitude in this picture is 9, 500 Kilometers (5, 900 miles). The earth's oimd and terminator nearly coincide with each other at the top of the picture. The limb is the upper boundary of the white zone and and the terminator is close to the lower boundary of this zone. This image is taken at Ultraviolet wavelengths corresponding to those of hydrogen emissions at 1216 Angstroms. Color coding ranges from white at high intensities of hydrogen surrounding the earth (exosphere) can be seen just above the earth's limb as it scatters light from the sun. The dark region in the lower portion of the picture is the last night side of earth. Apparent notches in the limb on the right- hand side of the picture are due to errors in determining the directions for scan lines from spacecraft telemetry and will be removed in subsequent computer reconstruction of the picture. The aurural oval can be seen extending over the night side of the Earth. It is a quite time for the aurora with out any signs of Storm activity. The auroral oval as seen in this image is positioned for the most part above Canada and could be seen only n the united States from the northern border
