Dec. 08, 1981 - This Large showing a (50-by-120 kilometer)- (30-by-75 mile-) area of the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern coast of Central Sardinia (left) is among the first processed data acquired by JPL's shuttle Imaging Radar- A (Sir- A) experiment aboard NASA's Space Shuttle Columbia during the shuttle's second flight Nov. 12-14, 1981. The city of Arbatose is seen as a bright area along the coast in the lower part of the image. Bright, mottled features in the sea (right) represent localized surface choppiness probably caused by winds at the ocean surface. This image, with a resolution of 40 meters (130 feet), was acquired on Saturday Nov. 14, 1981, at 3 a.m. (PST). As an imaging radar, Sir-A acquired images covering 10 million square Kilometers (3.8 million square miles) in regions all over the world. The successful Sir-A experiment was designed to determine the potential of using space-borne imaging radars as tools for geological mapping and earth resources observation. The Sir-A was carried aboard Columbia as part of the first payload of Scientific instruments assembled for the Space Shuttle by NASA's office of Space and terrestrial Applications (Osta-1) The Sir-A was developed by JPL for NASA
