Jun. 06, 1984 - Kennedy Space Center, Fla. -- Hughes Aircraft and AT&T personal conduct sensitive alignment checks on AT&T's Telstar 3 spacecraft undergoing preflight processing in Hangar AM at Cape Carnaveral Air Force Station. Telstar 3 is one of three commercial satellites that the orbiter discovery will deploy into orbit on the 41-F mission scheduled for late August. Designed by AT&T Bell Laboratories and built by Hughes Aircraft Corporation, the Telestar 3 series represents the latest in satellite communications technology. Each satellite is able to relay hundreds of Video teleconferences, 24 color television programs or billions of bits of high speed data and facsimile signals. In addition, improved batteries and solid state amplifiers will allow the Telestar 3 series to operate for 10 years. The second Telstar 3 will be placed in geostationary orbit at 76 degrees west longitude where it will replace two Comstar satellites that AT&T currently leases
