Aug. 08, 1966 - REFEREE QUITS AFTER ARGUMENT OVER RULES IN BIG GOLF BATTLE BETWEEN JACK NICKLAUS AND GARY PLAYER: An argument over the rules of golf - and then a change of referee for the battle between JACK NICKLAUS, of the USA and Gary Player of South Africa for Picadilly's £16, 000 World Match Play Title at Wentworth today. The incident which sparked off the argument between Nicklaus and Colonel Tony Duncan, the referee, came after Nicklaus had hooked has ball into a ditch. It was told by DUNCAN that he could lift the ball and count a penalty stroke. Having done this NICKLAUS found that to drop the ball again without penalty - this was refused by referee DUNCAN.
