Nov. 23, 1957 - Injured man in Australian cliff rescue drama. A 73 year old badly injured man, William Francis Grant, was rescued by Sydney police from the foot of a 160- feet cliff at Kurnell, Australia. The man had lain injured for more than four hours while the Police rescue squad fought to save him. Grant was fishing with four companions when a freak wave swept them all against the face of the cliff. When the wave subsided Grant was found trapped in a crevice and suffering a fractured thigh and abrasions. His companions dragged him clear of the water. Ambulance men were unable to move him above the high water mark. The police rescue squad, led by Sgt. Harry Ware, rigged a bosun's chair to bring him to the top. Ambulance men and helpers at the foot of the cliff carried the stretcher waist high through the water to get the injured man to the chair. He was then hauled to the cliff top. Photo shows Sgt.
