Jul. 07, 1965 - Australia's Golfing M.B.E. wins the open golf championship for the fifth time.: Australia's golfing M.B.E. Peter Thomson yesterday won the Open Golf Championship for the fifth time. Thousands of excited fans tore down railings as he walked towards the final green at Royal Birkdale, in Southport, Lancs. Thomson, the man everyone thought was finished as a world class player, collected £1, 750 for his four-round score of 285. He first won the Open in 1954 and followed up with wins in 1955, 1956 and 1958, but this year golf experts thought he was past his best. Photo shows Australia's Peter Thomson smilingly holds his trophy after winning the Open Golf Championship yesterday
