Apr. 30, 1952 - I was a member of the SS! With these words Lieutenant Randolph Clausen-Sternwald turned himself into a police station in Devon, England. The 28-year old, who submitted his identification papers on record in Ashburton with Yugoslavia as his nationality months ago, declared himself to a CID officer. He stated that, concealed as a Yugoslav, he came to England in 1948. In reality however he was Austrian and had been in the SS. On top of that, he had broken out of an American war concentration camp. Sternwald, who had married an Englishwoman in the meantime, had lived with his one year old son and stepfather in Devon, where he kept busy as a gardener and grew mushrooms. British authorities questioned as to why he turned himself in now, to which he responded that he could not have carried his secret with him for much longer.
