Aug. 12, 1955 - Thomas Mann dead. Thomas Mann, probably the most important contemporary Germany writers, died on August 12 in a Zurich cantonal hospital. Mann survived only a few months into his 80th birthday, and he did not reach the age of his master Goethe. The immediate cause of death was a thrombosis of a nerve inflammation, which he believed to have healed up in a Dutch North Sea spa
