Dec. 14 Birthday of Thomas Mann: Hundred years ago, on June 6th, 1875, author Thomas Mann (our picture) was born in Lubeck. mann, decended from an old middle class familly of Lubeck, became the leading intellectual representative of the middle classes of that time and was the initiator of modern style novel in Germany. His first successful work, Buddenbrooks, was published in 1901. In this novel Thomas Mann deals with the decline of middle classes and of health, as he did in many of his following stories and novels. Der Zauberberg (The magic mountain, Lotte in Weimar, Dr. Faustus, Bekkenntnisse des Hochetaplers Felix Krull (The confessions of impostor Felix Krull), Der Tod in Venadig (Death in Venice) and Tristan are only some of the most popular cities from Thomas Mann's extensive literal work. The author, who became 1929 the Nobel prize for literature as well as many other tributes, lived in Munich from 1893 on. 1934 he had to leave Germany, first he went to Switzerland, later to the United States. After the war, he returned to Switzerland, where he died on August 12th 1955 in Kilehberg
