Feb. 28 Messaggero staff calls strike; A new storm blew up today ownership and management of Rome's largest circulation newspaper II Mesdaggero'. The papers newsmen called strike against tomorrow's editions of the paper. The strike call came after Luigi Barzin Jr. a distinguished Italian journalist and author of an American best seller, received a letter from the president of the paper's council appointing him as director, or executive editor. However, owners of a 50 percent interest in the newspaper and its new staff said the letter was unauthorized. The controversy erupted early in June with the announcement that the other 50 percent of the newspaper had been sold to magazine publisher Edilio Rusconi who is known for his conservative views. In recent years Messaggero's editorial policy has been slightly to the left of center
