Mar. 20, 1964 - Author launches his new book from bed. Polio victim at the DOrchester hotel: Author Paul Bates - 30 year old Polio victim held a reception at the Dorchester Hotel this afternoon from his bed which he has not left since he was attacked with the disease in 1954 in spite of which he is a happy man. He wa accompanied by his co-author the Rev. John Pellow. Paul was a second lieutenant twenty years of age when he was first attacked by polio in the Malayan jungle. Now with the aid of Possum (Patient Operated Selector Mechanism) he can use the telephone make tea toast type and turn on the television. Paul gave the reception at the expense of his publishers who are treating him to three days in the luxury of the Dorchester Hotel. Book is entitled The Horizontal Man'. Photo shows the author Paul Bates seen in his special bed accompanied by his co-author the Rev. John Fellow at the Dorchester Hotel during the reception today
