Jul. 07, 1956 - Foster-Parents Keep Laura.: The mother of five-year old Laura, Little black girl who once had to advertise to find her a home recently decided to leave her foster-parents and to sail alone to her home in Lagos, Nigeria. Mabel Johnson the 28-year old mother, went to Warwick from London to take Laura back to Africa with her. But Laura will now stay on with foster-parents, Mr. Bernard Green, a postman and his wife, Mona, daughter of a West Indian, at Tile-hill Coventry, the only real home she has ever known. When mother and child met, for the first time in five years. Mabel Johnson realised she was a stranger to her daughter. The heartbreak for Mabel Johnson, then a student nurse, began a long time ago. Laura's father died, then the mother fell ill. Baby Laura was put into a private nursery - which closed down and Laura passed into the care of Warwickshire Children's Department. But they couldn't find foster parents for her. After four years they advertised - and the Greens came along. And Laura found a Happy home. Then Laura's mother recovered, went to work, and when she was able to return to Africa asked for her daughter back. The Greens brought Laura to the children's home - to hand her over to her mother. But after a conference, Mabel Johnson decided the leave the child with the people she knows and has come to love! So her brave decision to go home alone to Africa.
