Aug. 08, 1959 - Little Ann's Rescue Party: There were four V.I.P. guests at Ann Culverwell's fourth birthday party - but for them there would not have been a party. Seven weeks ago Ann fell into a cannal near her home in Raleigh-street, Stretford, near Manchester. Her four-year-old friend, Madeline Murphy, raced 100 yards to tell her mother, a neighbour of the Culverwells. Then, with two other neighbours holding on to her legs, Mrs. Murphy hung head down in the water and fished out Ann. Little Ann's mother was a grateful that she organised a street birthday party.
