Babies - Children - Multiple Births

Jan. 01, 1959 - Midwife Father Breaks The Law After Delivering His Own Baby Without Medical Help. A husband was accused of breaking the law because he delivered his wife's baby himself, without the benefit of a doctor, midwife, or medical supervision. Twenty-year-old Sheila Roberts wanted her husband to be present when her first baby was born, but the doctor said No'. So her 27-year-old husband went ahead and delivered the baby. Radio technician Owen Roberts was summoned before Bury St. Edmunds Court, Suffolk, and prosecuted by the West Suffolk County Council under the 1951 Midwifery Act. The baby was born in the Robert's caravan home at Chedburg, near Bury St. Edmunds. Roberts was conditionally discharged.
