Babies - Children - Multiple Births
Aug. 08, 1959 - Twelve Year Old Mother to a Tragic Family Works on with Courage. 12 year old Pat Dalton last night became little mother to a tragic family of four. A few hour earlier Pat had been told that her 34 year old mother had died in hospital after being trapped between a lorry and the railing of a bridge near their home in Tilbury, Essex. Pat set to work right away. She gave 20 month old Margaret a wash before putting her to bed. Then she made sure Alan, aged 11, and Brian aged 9, scrubbed behind their ears before saying goodnight. As she worked, her father 35 year old Mr. Arthur Dalton, said Whatever happens, my children and I will not be parted. Mr. Dalton, a radar operator added I know I can cope. I'm an ex naval man and I can cook, sew and darn. But a lot of work will fall on Pat, a red cross cadet who has certificates for mothercraft, nursing and first aid. One member of the family could not join the conference. She is 7 years old Brenda, who was standing next to her mother, when the lorry overturned. She is in hospital with a fractured pelvis.
