Aug. 08, 1959 - Twelve-year-old mother to a tragic Family works on with courage: 12-year-old Pat Dalton last night became Little Mother to a tragic family of four. A few hours earlier Pat had been told that her 34-year-old mother had died in hospital after being trapped between a lorry and the railing of a bridge near their home in Tilbury, Essex. Pat set to work right away. She gave 20-month-old Margaret a wash before putting her to bed. The she made sure Alan, aged 11, and Brain aged 9, scrubbed behind their ears before saying goodnight. As she worked. her father, 35-year-old Mr. Arthur Dalton, said; whatever happens, my children and I will not be parted'. Mr. Dalton, a radar operator, added: I know I can cope. I'm an ex-Naval man and I can cook, sew and darn'. But a lot of work will fall on Pat, A Red Cross cadet who has certificates for mother craft, nursing and first-aid. One member of the family could not join in the conference. She is 17-year-old Brenda, who was standing next to her mother, when the lorry overturned. She is in hospital with a fractured pelvis.
