Feb. 25, 1969 - She Gambled With Her Life For A Baby: Two - months old Steven Sheard is the prise of lifetime for this mother, 28-year old Mrs. Evelyn Sheard. for when Mrs. Sheard decided to have a baby she was gambling with her own life. Three years ago Mrs. Sheard, of workington (Cumberland) had the artic valve in her heart replaced in a serious operation at the Hammer smith Hospital in London. After the operation surgeons pointed out the grave risk I would be talking i I had any children, partly because of the drugs I have to take said Mrs. Sheard. She added I heard of the very few women who have had children after a similar operation and decided to take the gamble myself. I am delighted that I took the chance. her husband, Robert, a steelworker, said The nine months wait was hard work and very nerve racking - I lost eight pounds in weight. But it was a worth while gamble. Steven - the couple's only child -weighted 7 pounds when he was born at the West Cumberland Hospital in White haven (Cumb). He now weighs just ever ten pounds, and is still progressing well
