Aug. 26, 1970 - Lioness mauls girl in car; A mother fought off a lioness with her bare hands after her five year old daughter had been badly mauled as the animal attacked their car in the Duke of Bedford's wild animal park at Weburn Abbey Beds. As the lioness tugged at the child, Mrs. Lorna Constrandimes, who was also visiting the park, drove her own car at it, driving it away. The mother, Mrs, Susan Symons Jones, of Stoke Hammond, Bletchley, Bucks, was treated for a lacerated hand. Her daughter, Sian, was said to be satisfactory after an operation in Luton and Dustable Hospital. They were passengers in a mini traveler being driven through the park by Mrs. Carland Erskine, of Soulbury, Bucks. A Woburn Abbey spokesman said the occupants of the car were told on three occasions by rangers to close the windows of the car and did so before proceeding. But Mrs. Erskine explained later that the rear windows of the mini traveler were of the sliding type and one was fractionally open as the car entered the lion park, because of the heat in the vehicle. We were driving in the center of three lines of cars to the lion enclosure. Then suddenly this lioness bounded at our Mini. It stuck its paw into the window, pushed it aside and tried to get in. It bit Sian on the leg and Mrs. Symone Jones was trying to push the lioness out. A Woburn Abbey spokesman said there was no need to shoot the lioness Twiggy because of the incident.
