Dec. 12, 1967 - Ten Year Old Boy Banned From Running - Because He Ran For Money. 10-year old Christopher Parker has been banned from running by an athletic association - because he raced for money. Christopher, of Baird Road, Harraby, Carlisle, who has won many prizes since his career started two years ago, is regarded as one one of the best runners of his age in Britain. Up to now he has run in competitions affiliated to Cumberland Boys and Girls Footracing Association, which has meetings in the North West of England. His offence came when he ran as a professional at Yetholm (Roxburghshire) and got a money prize. The Association Secretary, Mr. Albert Hughes, of Workington (Cumberland), said: We have no wish to ban this boy completely - we have suspended him until we get a satisfactory explanation from his father. He is a great Olympic prospect - he runs like a machine. The race in question was a youth half-mile handicap for which he got Pound 3 for winning. I'm told that he won by 100 yards, running against boys six or eight years older than himself. Mr. Hughes said that his association had 250 registered runners. Our rules are not the same as the A.A.A. - they don't ban runners under 16 who race for money. But they do frown upon it. Our rules were drawn up half a century ago to out gambling on children and other undesirable practises. Christopher's mother said: Christopher doesn't understand what it is all about. But we think a boy should be able to run where he wants. She added: Christopher wants to run at professional meetings including Powderhall. He will probably go ahead and to this and leave the association. Photo Shows:- 10-year old Christopher Parker - he runs like a machine
