Baby elephant at Harrods, London, en route for USA

Nov. 11, 1967 - Gift Elephant: His Majesty King Leka of Albania has purchased a baby Indian elephant. He is presenting it to the Governor Reagan of California, USA. This is the first live elephant for his collection. The elephant, supplied by Harrods Ltd, will be dispatched by air to San Francisco from London Airport on Thursday, Nov. 9th. The elephant has a particular significance because it is the mascot of the Republican Party. She is at present known as Gertie- and there was a photo call this afternoon at Harrods loading bay. Photo shows Gertie, the elephant makes friends with the member of the staff of Harrods, after being unleaded from her crate at the store's loading bay this afternoon
