Mar. 31 40 years of French onions: 40 times in 40 years Paul Bastard has made his Autumn trip to London, complete with several tons of onions. For Paul is one of the few remaining Breton onion sellers left in this country. Each year he and his two sons Rene and Francois grow the onions at their home in Roteneaf on the Brittany coast - then they assemble and plait the delicately flavoured harvest to come to London, selling them from door to door. Both Pauls sons have served in the French army, but have now decided to help keep on what is now a rare trade, so they come, with their father each Autumn, to work here until March. Two days a week they spend in a small shed in Hemmersmith, making up the strings of onions - unless they must fo to Portsmouth to collect now assignents sent by their mother in France. Bicycles specially made for them can hold up to 20 strings of onions, which sell at about 7/each, generally to old friends. A van follows the cycles to provide new supplies, so they are fully stocked for their 12 hour daily rounds
