Mar. 22, 1966 - American milk being distributed to thousands of African Pre school children in Tanzania; Thousand of Tanzania children around Dares Salaam, capital of Tanzania are now being fed under a health and nutrition scheme organized by the Catholic Relief Services of the United States of America. The fact that many children in Tanzania are not getting enough protein from their food has been a concern of Women of Tanzania, especially their leader Mrs. Maria Nyerere, wife of the President of Tanzania. The health centers have been set up in villages around DaresSalaam where children are weighed, examined and given a monthly supply of milk. A unique aspect of the scheme is the use of a weight chart for the children which allows their mothers and untrained help to very quickly detect significant weight changes. This program is supervised at the centers by a professional trained nurse in consultation with Mrs. Marshall, an American expert. The centers are run by volunteers from Women Organizations in Tanzania. Mothers are also taught how to mix their own cups of milk Palastic cups for this porpose have been made available for sale at a reasonable price. The milk in this program is free of charge but a monthly contribution of /50 cents (East African cents) is being asked of each recipient to cover the running costs. The milk is being given by the American people through the Catholic Relief Services NCWC and some financial support for the program comes from the National Council of Catholic Women in America
