Feb. 26 Laya Raki Stars In Epic Film Of Early Days Of New Zealand: Laya Raki, 22-year-old sensational dancer who specialises in native and oriental dancing is playing the part of the beautiful Maori girl, Moana in the new J.Arthur Rank New Zealand film The Seekers most of the scenes of which are being made in New Zealand. Laya is the daughter of a German father and a Dutch-Javanese mother. The Seekers is the epic story of an Empire Builder of the early 19th century when the British Colonisers were settling in New Zealand. Moana in the beautiful wife of a friendly Maori Chieftain, who falls in love with the white settler, played by Jack Hawkins. There are several, for the few scenes from the film being made in this country, a Maori village of over a hundred years ago has been reconstructed in a studio. The film is produced by George Brown and directed by Ken Annakin. Laya Rald has a charming smile and is well cast for her part as Moana the Maori girl. Her costume is of feathers and bamboo and she wears a Maori charm
