Barbara Burr, two orangutans, Chessington Zoo

Aug. 08, 1968 - Living with apes. 20-year old Barbara Burr, a student teacher is spending the next five week living with two orangutans, at Chessington Zoo. But that's all in the cause of science. Barbara, from Brighton College of Education, is writing a thesis on the two apes. Fellow students at the college think I'm mad to try such a thing. But I'm doing it so that I can write a thesis for my tutor at the college. I teach in a year's time. She has already devised a series of experiments to test their intelligence, such as knocking pegs into holes, and putting a spring snake in a jar, and seeing how they react to the toy. Other props include a peg board, toys and boxes of various colours. Barbara started the experiment last week and spends at least two hours a day in the company of the two oranguntans, Tuan, the male, and Njoja, the female. Barbara emphasized: This is not a stunt. I wrote to the zoo in the first place because i want to do this study. Apes are probably the most intelligent creatures outside human beings and by observing them I hope to be able to learn a lot about human behavior as well.
