Bas relief commemorating Jesuit settlement in USA

Feb. 26 Jesuit Settlement Commemorated: This recently-erected 49 by 56 inch bas relief commemorates the establishment of a settlement here in 1613 by three Jesuit priests and one Jesuit brother. The colony, later destroyed by a British expedition, was the fourth settlement established by Jesuit missionaries in what is today the United States. In 1566 a Spanish Jesuit landed in Georgia near the Florida border and in 1570 eight Jesuits established a settlement in Virginia near where Jamestown was later founded. In 1611 two of the Jesuit priests who later came to mount Desert Island spent a few months on the Maine Shore of the Bay Of Fundy. These two men, father Ennemond Masse and father Pierre Biard, returned to Maine in 1613 to establish Saint Sauveur and to do missionary work among the Indians. With them was another priest, Father Jacques Quentin, a Jesuit brother, Gilbert Du That, and a guard of French soldiers. The bas relief depicts the Jesuit Priests raising a cross while several Indians and French soldiers look on. It was erected by John J. O'Brien, Catholic co chairman of the Detroit office of the national conference of Christians and Jews who has a summer estate on the island where the landing was made 339 years ago. Walter Midenes of the society of arts and crafts of Detroit made it
