Belgian fisherman arrested for fishing in UK waters
Jul. 07, 1963 - Royal Invader Captured By The Navy: Belgian Fisherman Tests Charter Validity. Belgian-Victor de Paepe had warned the British Authorities that he intended to fish inside British territorial waters-and yesterday-he was arrested by men of the Navy Vessel H.M.S. Braves Swordsman'. Victor did this to test the validity of a Charter granted by king Charles II in1666 which allows 50 fisherman from Bruges to fish in English waters-in gratitude for salter in Bruges during his exile. De Paepe later appeared at Lews Court-charged with'ppaching'. The case was adjourned until August 7th. and he freed on10 bale. Photo shows. A police escort for M.
