The artist who was born in Vienna, Austria was one of the most important character-actresses during many decades; mainly in the role as Mother Courage she became well known in the whole world. After the death of her husband, the writer Bertolt Brecht in the year 1956 she took over the directing of the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in East Berlin, which was founded by Bertolt Brecht and her.
