Sep. 09, 1961 - Lord Russell sent to jail for inciting public to take part in sit down demonstration against Nuclear weapons. Earl Russell the 89 year old philosopher was today jailed for seven days at Bow Street for inciting the public to take part in a sit-down demonstration in Parliament Square next Sunday in protest against nuclear weapons. The magistrate Mr. Bertram Reece, cut the sentence from two months to seven days after taking his medical condition into account. Lord Russell was jailed with other members of his Committee of 100 for persisting in plans to hold the sit-down protest by 10, 000 people. They declined to be bound over to keep the peace and so the court sent them to prison instead. Most of the others received a sentence of one month.
