Oct. 16, 1953 - Pope Opens New College In Rome: The Pope went into Rome from his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo to open the new North American College on the Janiculum Hill. Rarely in the last 80 years has a Pope attended ceremonies of this kind outside the Vatican. He was accompanied by 15 Cardinals, including Cardinal Spellman, of New York. The new college has 347 rooms, and it stands in 15 acres of park. It cost nearly ?1, 500, 000, paid for by American Catholics. Photo shows The Pope arrives to perform the opening ceremony
