Oct. 10, 1959 - London's Blitzed Stars and stripes church is being rebuilt: The cross and the Stars and Stripes Church are being restored to a London landmark which suffered in a 1940 blitz. Officially Christ Church, Lambeth, the church received its popular and American name because of its Stars-and-Stripes decorated Lincoln Tower (named for the American President). Opened on July 4, 1876, the centenary of American Independence, the church was given some £20, 000 towards its construction by American friends of the Rev. Newman Hall, pastor of a chapel on the site on which it was constructed and a firm Union supporter in the struggle between the States. Left: Steeple Jacks a top the 200 ft.
