Feb. 26 The Horse That Joined In the Carols: Leaning over the shoulders of the vicar of Northian, Su, the Rev. R.J. Lax-West, is one of the now-happy residents of the ST. Francis Fields of Rest in the stables of which the Carol Service was conducted. Horse Saved From Slaughter Are Hosts At Open-Air Carol Service: To the newly thatched stables at the St. Francis Fields of rest, run by Our Dumb Friends League and the Blue Cross, for ponies, donkies and horses rescued from the slaughterhouse, came the village people, young and old, of Northiam in Sussex. They were led there, and led in the carols by the white surprised choirboys and vicar (The Rev.R.J. Lax-West) of the village church, and from the choirs of Brighton and Lewes churches. Local resident Robert Spaght, the well-known actor, attended and recited G.K. Chesterton's famous poem - The Donkey'. Television cameras were present and in a forthcoming children's newsreel the sound of the singing will be heard. Idea of the Service was as a Thanksgiving for the Fields of Rest which were opened six months ago and which have provided happy retirement for so many four-footed beasts
