Horses Saved From Slaughter Are Hosts At Open-Air Carol Service: To the newly thatched stables at the St. Francis Fields of Rest, run by-Our Dumb Friends League and the Blue Cross, for ponies, donkies and horses rescued from the slaughterhouse, came the village people, young and old, of Northism in Sussex. They were led there, and led in the carols, by the white surpliced choirboys and vicar (The Rev. R.J.Lax-West) of the village church, and from the choirs of Brighton and Lewes churches. Local resident Robert Speaght, the well-known actor, attended and recited G.K.Chesterton's famous poem - The Donkey'. Television cameras were present and in a forthcoming children's newsreel, the sound of the singing will be heard. Idea of the Service was as a Thanksgiving for the Fields of Rest which were opened six months ago and which have provided happy retirement for so many four-footed beasts
