Feb. 26 Work in the Crypt Below St. Stephan's. Workmen are putting ply-wood patterns into position in he windows, after removing the damaged stained glass windows. These will either be replaced or repaired. The fine vaulting and gilding can easily be seen in this picture. The ancient crypt at the House of Commons is now closed for repairs and redecoration. Work in the 20-foot high vaulted chamber which is a remnant of the old St. Stephan's which escaped the fire in 1834. delicate and exacting. Meanwhile christenings and weddings, increasingly popular among Members and Peers, have had to be suspended. The work will take several months. Much of the gilding has been untouched for 100 years. The tiled floor is to be repaired, and the stained glass windows, shattered during the war, are to be replaced. Finely groined vaulting with most of the original bosses will be inspected for decay. The Crypt was built as a chapel and dedicated to St.Mary Undercroft, and has been used as a coal cellar and as a stable
