Mar. 31 Athos, Monastery Republic In addition to the Monasteries, there are the skites (or hermits settlements) on the Holy Mountain. These consist of small houses, occupied by one or more monks, and built around central church, very much like a village. This is the skiti of Kafsokalivia, located on the tip of the Athos Promontory, at the foot of the peak. Some 2, 300 years ago, Xerxes unseaworthy fleet, on its way to conquer Athens, ran into foul weather, just as it was rounding the Athos Promontory, and sank within sight of the spot where Kafsokalivia Skiti is now located
