Apr. 17 Africa Gets A new Bishop From America: Roman Catholics in the Accra Diocese of the Gold Coast, the British African Colony is moving rapidly towards self-government, have just received a Bishop from the United States - the Rt. Reerend Joseph Bowers. Born in Dominica, British West Indies, the 43-year-old Bishop entered a seminary in the United States at the age of 18, joined the Society of Divine Word in 1939 and was ordinates after a year of special study in Rome. Photo shows A Papal Bull from the Pope appointing Bishop Bowere as the Catholic Bishop of the Accra Diccese is red to the large Congregation at the first pontifical high mass sung by the new Bishop (seated on throne)
