Apr. 17 Philippine Penitents Hold Painful Good Friday Ritual in Manila.: Philippine penitents, many of them covered with blood from being whipped with strips of leather, held their annual biblical enactment of the Crucifixion in Manila on Good Friday. Awesome scenes were witnessed by large crowds as men representing Christ took turns to carry a heavy wooden cross to which one of them was finally affixed. Other penitents lay prostrate on their ground while Roman soldiers whipped them until they bled.
