Aug. 08, 1966 - NEW CROSS FOR THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY. When the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Ramsey, leaves England on August 30th to tour Canada he will take with him a new, modern silver cross - the New Primatial Cross'. This cross, which will be carried in front of the Archbishop by The Chaplain, The Rev. John Andrew, was designed by John Ruby, of Westbere, near Canterbury. Head of the School of Industrial Design at the Canterbury College of Art, John Ruby was privately commissioned for a patriarchal processional cross weighing less the 20 lbs. The one he made in fact weighs only two pounds, which gives a better balance when the Cross is carried in procession. The design, said John Ruby, is entirely new in conception and is not ecclesiastical silversmithing in the accepted traditional sense but more perhaps light precision engineering. It is intended to reflect something of the present scientific and mechanical age. The Cross is so designed that it can be taken apart into four sections. It's other feature, the lightness in weight with strength, was achieved by tapered channel form for the limbs of the Cross. Mr. Ruby also made an African walnut case for it.
