May 05, 1968 - Methodist missionary begins hunger strike as protest against the wealth of churches in face of world poverty: The Rev. Merfyn Temple, 49, a Methodist missionary, today began a hunger strike by the tomb of David Livingstone, in Westminster Abbey, as a protest against the churches in Britain and their wealth and misuse of resources as against the needs of the world's poor. The Rev. Temple has chosen the week following the Christian Aid appeal as he feels that this is when the churches will be feeling at their most complacent about their efforts to feed the hungry world. Mr. Temple has been a Methodist missionary in Zambia for the past 25 years. Photo shows the Rev. Merfyn Temple is seen talking at a press conference before entering the Abbey to begin his fast today
