May 04, 1971 - Bishop Ordains Married Deacons: The first married Roman Catholic deacons to be ordained in Britain Standing with their families after the ceremony, conducted by the Bishop of Leeds, the Rt. Rev. William Wheeler (centre), at Leeds Roman Catholic Cathedral on Sunday. Holding two of his three children is the Rev. Anthony Winn, 46, a teacher, while his wife, Josephine, is holding their baby. Behind the Rev. Maurice Pearce, 51, a Civil servant, and his wife, Bridget, are their children. Deacons do not celebrates Mass, hear confessions, or anoint the sick, but they administer baptism, preach and assist at marriages and funerals
