May 05, 1980 - Archbishop leads Pilgrim at Walsingham: 15, 000 pilgrims by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Robert Runcie, gathered at Walsingham, Norfolk, yesterday to give thanks for the life of the Virgin Mary. it was the first time in modern history that an Anglican Primate officiated at the ceremony; and outdoor Solemn Mass was celebrated in the Abbey grounds. Protestors demonstrated against the visit and the Archbishop had to walk past various banners. the Duchess of Kent, who lives nearby at Amer, sat with other pilgrims and queued to receive Communion.
