1962 - Buddhist monk from Burma arrives in London - and catches the foreign office napping: Arthapha, a Buddhist monk, came 8, 000 miles from Burma as the guest of the Foreign Office, but he arrived early, and there was no welcome ready. Yesterday red-faced Foreign Office officials realised they had been caught unprepared. they made a quich decision and offered to put him up in a hotel. But saffron-robed Baikkhu Thiri Maha Shwebo U Arthapha refused, for he is more used to life in a monastery. Because there was no welcome for Arthapa when he arrived on Tuesday, he spent his first night watching TV at the London council flat in Brixton of two Burmese friends. Photo shows Buddhist monk Baikkhu Thiri Maha Shwebo u Arthapha seen with some children with whom he made friends in Brixton yesterday.
