Blower tunner in operation at AAEE, Boscombe Down

Sep. 09, 1954 - Flying Cockpit: After over 40 years of secrecy, the British Ministry of Supply has allowed the public to get a glimpse of the work being done by the Aeronautical and Armament Experimental Establishment at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, England. On a recent visit, British reporters and photographers saw demonstrations which included a new aircraft cannon, fitted to a fighter plane, which has been designed to counter the atom bomber. Picture shows: At one of the Experimental Establishment's demonstrations, the cockpit hood of an Avro Vulcan jet bomber is blown around by air from a powerful wind tunnel, after being automatically jettisoned. This Blower tunnel, believed the only one of its kind in existence, creates wind speeds of over 250 mph
