Sep. 09, 1956 - Donald Campbell breaks his own World Water Speed record - Bluebird reaches 286 m.p.h.: Donald Campbell has done it again. He astonished the world last night when he smashed his own world water speed record in his jet-boat Bluebird in a death-defying dash of 286.78 m.ph. on Lake Coniston. Oh his second run, as Bluebird rolled, bounced, and snaked, he was forced to cut his speed to 164.48 m.p.h. because fumes filled his cockpit, but it was enough to break the world record for the third time in 15 months at over 225 m.p.h. Photo shows Donald Campbell with his wife Dorothy and daughter Georgina, who yesterday celebrated her 10th birthday - after his record breaking run
